The Germany Semester Ticket
The Germany Semester Ticket is a ticket for local public transport (ÖPNV) throughout Germany that students can use during their studies. It is automatically purchased by paying the “mobility contribution” as part of the semester fee upon enrollment or re-registration, even if the student does not intend to use the services. Because this rule applies to all students, the semester ticket can be particularly inexpensive and is therefore especially beneficial to students who regularly use public transportation.
The Semester Ticket in the naveo-App
From November 1 semester tickets for all students will be issued via the naveo app from Aachen's public transport company. In future, tickets will no longer be issued on chip cards as standard. Information about the changes for current students and new enrollees, as well as detailed instructions, can be found below.
- On October 6, an email containing the activation code will be sent to your university email address. You will need this code to register in the naveo app.
- The ticket will be displayed in the app from October 20. If this is not the case for you, log in again and, if necessary, contact naveo Support by email: hallo@naveo.info
- Your Germany semester ticket will be active and valid in the naveo app from November 1.
- You can still use your chip card until December 1. By then, you should have registered with the naveo app!
naveo-App
The most important points in brief
- If you have used a chip card until now, you will recieve aregistration codeat your FH Mail adress, which you can use to register in the naveo app.
- If you prefer to use a chip card instead of the naveo app, you can select this option on the services page of FH Aachen. By default, the use of the naveo app is selected.
- Instead of using naveo, you can also continue to use the chip card; however, you must actively request this via the services page of FH Aachen.
- Minors will continue to receive the chip card automatically (no application necessary) and will only be able to use the naveo app once they reach the age of majority.
For First-time Enrollers
To recieve the mail with the link, you need to do the following:
- Your enrollment must be complete (documents submitted and semester fees paid).
- You must have completed your welcome process at FH Aachen.
- You must also set up your FH email account and check it regularly.
General Important Information:
- You can use EITHER the app OR the chip card, but not both.
- For sustainability reasons, we recommend using the app. You can try out naveo and if in doubt, you can still decide later to use the chip card instead.
- The semester ticket remains valid in the Dutch region of South Limburg. When checked, show either your FH card or a certificate of enrollment. In the future, we are working on a way to scan the South Limburg add-on in an app or on a chip card at card readers on buses and at train stations.
Using the naveo app
- Download naveo from the Google Play Store (Android) or from the App Store (iOS).
- ASEAG will send a link code to your university email address. You will need this code to register with naveo. Please only use the link code to register and only use it once! Otherwise, no ticket will be displayed after registration and you will have to contact naveo Support.
- Open naveo and tap on “Tickets” at the bottom, then on “My Account,” then on “Register Guest Now,” and then on “Register for Free.”
- Copy your code from the email into the corresponding field and enter your date of birth. Then tap “Continue.”
- Next, you need to choose a username. Then activate the switch to accept the terms and conditions. Finally, tap “Save.”
- Nun siehst du eine Bestätigung, dass deine Registrierung erfolgreich war. Du bekommst eine E-Mail, um dir ein Passwort zu vergeben. Öffne dazu dein FH-Mail-Postfach.
- Tap “Set password” in the email. A website will open. Tap “Click here to continue” and set your own password. Please note the conditions for your password, which will be displayed. Once you have successfully set your password, return to naveo.
- In the naveo app, you can exit the current window by tapping the arrow in the upper left corner. A login window will appear. Tap “Login” there.
- Log in with the username and password you just created. The window will close automatically. You will now see your name next to the header icon at the top.
- In the “Tickets” section, you can tap on your semester ticket.

General Information
The chip card or, in future, the smartphone ticket via the naveo app is valid as a ticket. For verification purposes, the ticket must be presented together with official photo ID (this applies to both the German and Dutch sides). The ticket is valid for the entire semester, including during the lecture-free period.
To transport bicycles, you need a special additional ticket for the transport association you are traveling with. Some transport associations have restricted times for bicycle transport. At ASEAG, for example, according to the house rules (p. 9), bikes are only allowed Monday through Friday from 7 p.m., Saturdays from 3 p.m., and all day Sunday, and only if the bus driver says it's okay.
If you are planning to cycle throughout North Rhine-Westphalia, we recommend the DB's FahrradTicket NRW for day trips. For regular trips, it is better to purchase the NRWupgrade Fahrrad.
First class travel is not possible with the semester ticket. If you would still like to travel first class, you can use the NRWupgrade 1st class for travel throughout North Rhine-Westphalia.
If you lose your chip card, the ASEAG customer center will issue a new one upon presentation of a certificate of enrollment. A fee is charged for this service.
Were you checked on the bus or train and didn't have a valid ticket? That's no problem if you can show your Germany semester ticket at the ASEAG customer center within the next few days. There is a processing fee.
Unfortunately, no. You have to choose one of the two options. However, if you change your mind, you can switch back from the app to the physical chip card, or vice versa.
