The state government is planning millions in cuts—including at Aachen University of Applied Sciences. We want to protest against this!

No cuts at the expense of the future – For reliable university funding
The planned cuts to basic funding for universities in North Rhine-Westphalia, amounting to approximately €255 million, and the planned withdrawal of approximately €240 million from university reserves pose a serious threat to the quality of teaching, research, and study in our federal state. The Aachen University of Applied Sciences is also affected by cuts amounting to €3 million and an additional reduction in reserves. These measures represent a drastic cutback in education policy and pose a considerable threat to North Rhine-Westphalia's innovation and competitiveness.
The consequences of the cuts – A dramatic step backwards
Concrete cuts are already evident at many universities, including our university of applied sciences. Many universities in North Rhine-Westphalia are already reporting problems:
- Elimination of assistant positions, especially in teaching (e.g., tutorials and in the laboratory)
- Reductions in student assistant hours
- Elimination of professorships, restrictions on study programs
- Declining quality of support and brain drain
- Uncertainty and staff overload due to unclear cost-cutting measures
- Threat to small and cost-intensive disciplines, especially in teacher training
A cut of this magnitude would lead to the loss of thousands of jobs, the elimination of professorships, a decline in student numbers, and the loss of millions of euros in third-party funding.
Join us in protesting against the cuts!
Demo in Düsseldorf
- 5.11.2025
-
Demonstration at 1:00 p.m.
rally at 3:00 p.m. - Meeting point: Aachen Central Station for joint travel at 11:00 a.m.
To emphasize our demands, we support the planned demonstration by the Landes-ASten-Treffen (LAT) on November 5 in Düsseldorf. The LAT is an association of student representatives from many universities in North Rhine-Westphalia, including the AStA of the Aachen University of Applied Sciences.
The demonstration is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the DGB Haus Düsseldorf and will culminate in a rally in front of the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament at 3:00 p.m. To travel there together, we will meet at 11:00 a.m. at Aachen Central Station (departure RE 4 at 11:21 a.m. – arrival Düsseldorf Central Station at 12:39 p.m.). We are planning for 1,000 to 1,500 participants.
Our demands on the state government
- Completely reverse the planned cuts: Education is not something to be economized on. Cuts of this magnitude are irresponsible and, in the long term, more expensive than any investment.
- Ensuring sustainable, reliable, and needs-based core funding: Universities need planning security—for personnel, research, teaching, and infrastructure.
- No withdrawals from earmarked reserves: These funds are necessary to ensure stability in times of crisis and to implement legal requirements.
- Transparent and fair participation of universities in consolidation measures: If savings have to be made, this must not be done at the expense of universities alone.
- Investment instead of cuts – especially now: Declining student numbers call for better support, targeted study guidance, and lifelong learning – not fewer opportunities.
Our appeal
Cutting back on science means cutting back on the future.
We demand a clear commitment to higher education in North Rhine-Westphalia. Universities must not continue to be underfunded and undermined. They are not the problem—they are part of the solution to the challenges of our time.
We call on you: Stop the cuts. Invest in education, science, and the future of our country—strengthening universities is the answer, not structurally weakening them!
